What is Concrete Flatwork ?

What is the difference between Concrete Flatwork and Concrete Paving?

Think of like this: Concrete Paving uses concrete to create durable and load bearing surfaces designed to withstand heavy traffic. Concrete Flatwork is more about creating a smooth and level surface which is aesthetically pleasing for general all purpose use. An example might be the concrete floor at your large home improvement box store.

How thick is Concrete Flatwork ?

Concrete Flatwork is flat, horizontal areas of concrete which is usually 5″ or less in thickness. The Flatwork is placed directly on the ground, over compacted sand or gravel and includes some type of rebar for stability.

What are some of the pros of Concrete Flatwork ?

There’s a reason concrete flatwork is everywhere in our world: It works. Industrial-grade flatwork can withstand ~6,000 PSI of force. That’s equivalent to the weight of two Toyota Corollas condensed into a single square inch. Concrete flatwork requires very little in the way of maintenance, especially with proper installation and upkeep. No-frills, gray concrete slabs are standard in the construction industry.

What are some of the cons of Concrete Flatwork ?

Unfortunately, the integrity of concrete flatwork is at the mercy of several factors out of your control, such as temperature changes and earth shifts. Concrete expands with heat exposure and shrinks when ground temperatures plummet. This process is called thermal cracking. When the ground underneath a section of poured concrete starts to shift, it’s at risk of settling, or sinking. It’s rare, but in areas with heavy rainfall, it’s possible. Narrow gaps between the soil and concrete — either from poor preparation or burrowing rodents — gives the slab the freedom to settle.

What steps are involved with the Concrete Flatwork process ?

Step 1- Soil excavation and site prep
Step 2- Install the forms to create the shape
Step 3- Reinforcements such as rebar or welded wire mesh to add strength
Step 4- Pour the concrete into the area designed by the forms. After mixing the cement, aggregate, and water into a thick mixture, the poured concrete will then undergo the screed and trowel process to create a dense, flat surface.
Step 5- Curing. Freshly poured concrete needs 28 days to dry completely as it “cures” and becomes a harder surface. Samson may apply a sealant to prevent stains and water absorption when the concrete is fully cured depending on the requirements of the job.
